Mobility Modeling, Connectivity, and Adaptive Clustering in Ad Hoc Networks

This work deals with self-organizing mobile communication networks, so-called ad hoc networks. We make contributions to the theoretical understanding, simulation technique, and design of these networks. First, we address the modeling of movement behavior of mobile devices. We analyze commonly used stochastic mobility models, discuss their pitfalls, and present a new model. Next, we investigate several typical topology properties of ad hoc networks. In particular, we solve open issues with respect to the connectivity among the devices. Finally, we study the design and performance of distributed algorithms for dynamic clustering. All topics are treated using analytical methods as well as computer-based simulations.
